If an API exists, use the API
A bot clicking through a screen that has a documented interface behind it is technical debt with a monthly licence attached. It breaks on the next vendor release, it cannot be load tested, and it is difficult to explain in an audit. We check for an interface before we propose an automation, and we say so when integration is the right answer, even though it is usually the smaller engagement.
